Ants in the kitchen: why do they keep coming back?

Ants can return as long as a food source or entry point remains. Clean the trail, remove crumbs and drink residues and check where they enter. Species identification is important for small ants that remain active indoors.

Follow the route before cleaning it

Note the entry point and see where the ants are heading. Check sugar, spilled drinks, pet food and waste. The visible route does not necessarily reveal the nest location.

Avoid disturbing a nest without a plan. The right approach depends on the species.

Make food less accessible

Seal supplies, clean trails and remove food residues. Check under appliances and around waste bins, not just the worktop.

In a business, agree who is responsible for cleaning and stock management so that measures are maintained.

When does sealing gaps help?

Sealing suitable openings can restrict access. Have relevant joints repaired without blocking ventilation or services.

Ants outdoors are not automatically a problem. Focus on the route and nuisance indoors.

Why not simply use a spray?

An indiscriminate treatment may not reach the source. If pharaoh ants are suspected, the wrong approach can make the problem more complex.

If activity persists, ask for identification and targeted guidance, especially in a food business or shared building.

Frequently asked questions

They follow scent trails towards food. Clean the route and remove the source.

Wings can be part of a mating flight. They are not sufficient on their own to identify the species.

Sources and further information

General information, not a diagnosis for your location. Have the species identified if in doubt. Consult a healthcare professional about health symptoms and do not use pesticides without appropriate instructions.
