Do you regularly see small moths in your home? You probably want to know quickly where they are coming from and how to get rid of them. The most important step is not catching the flying moths, but finding the place where their larvae live. For clothes moths, this is often animal-derived textiles; for food moths, it is dry food products. Below, you can read how to tell the difference, locate the source and safely start controlling moths. This information is accessible to everyone; RBL Services provides services for business clients.

Clothes moth or food moth: what is the difference?

Not every moth that flies indoors causes problems. Many moths happen to come in through an open window. Repeated sightings of small moths, combined with larvae, webbing or damage, give more reason to investigate.

Clothes moths are usually small and fairly uniform straw-yellow to golden in colour. They often stay in dark, undisturbed places, such as wardrobes, carpet edges and stored textiles. Their larvae can damage animal-derived materials, including wool, fur and feathers. Blended fabrics containing animal fibres can also be vulnerable. The adult moth itself does not eat holes in your clothes.

Food moths are mainly found around food cupboards and stored food products. Some species have distinctly two-toned wings, but not all do. The larvae can occur in flour, cereals, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, herbs and dry pet food. Threads of webbing, clumped products and small caterpillars are important clues.

Colour or location alone cannot provide certainty. If in doubt, the Kennis- en Adviescentrum Dierplagen (KAD, Dutch Pest Knowledge and Advice Centre) can help identify the species. You can find more background in our information on flying insects.

How to find the source of moths in your home

Start where you see the most activity, but also investigate adjoining rooms. Food moth larvae, for example, can crawl out of packaging and pupate elsewhere. A small caterpillar near the ceiling therefore does not mean that the source is there.

Suspect places for clothes moths

Carefully empty the affected cupboard and check in particular:

  • Woollen jumpers, scarves, blankets and clothing left unused for a long time.
  • Seams, folds, pockets and dark corners of storage boxes.
  • Carpet edges, the undersides of rugs and upholstered furniture.
  • Fluff, hair and dust under furniture and along skirting boards.

Look for irregular holes, larvae, webbing and small cases. Old textile damage does not prove that an infestation is still active. New damage and live larvae make this more likely.

Suspect places for food moths

Check all dry food supplies, including unopened packaging. Thin cardboard or film does not always rule out an infestation. Do not forget birdseed, dry pet food, baking ingredients and rarely used supplies at the back of the cupboard.

Also inspect packaging seams, screw holes and gaps in cupboard shelves. Larvae or pupae may remain there. Keep looking when you find one infested product: several packages may be affected.

First steps for clothes moths

Keep suspect textiles separate in tightly sealed bags or containers. This limits their spread while you determine which treatment is suitable.

Wash affected textiles at the highest temperature allowed by the care label. A low-temperature wash is not always sufficient to kill all life stages. If a garment cannot be washed at a high temperature, consult a professional textile cleaner about a suitable treatment.

Freezing may be an option for some materials, but the result depends on the temperature, treatment duration and how quickly the entire item freezes through. Ask KAD for an appropriate protocol rather than assuming that one night in the freezer will suffice.

Thoroughly vacuum the empty cupboard, seams and surrounding floor. Immediately dispose of the vacuum cleaner contents in a sealed rubbish bag. Then store treated, clean and dry textiles in sealed storage.

First steps for food moths

Discard clearly infested food in a tightly sealed bag and take it to the outdoor waste container. Simply removing visible larvae is not enough: eggs and small larvae are easily missed.

Empty the food cupboard completely. Vacuum gaps and holes, clean the surfaces and let everything dry thoroughly before putting products back. Carefully check the remaining supplies and store them in sturdy storage jars or containers that seal tightly.

Do not use insect spray on food or food-contact surfaces. Consult the NVWA (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) for information on food safety, especially in a professional kitchen or food business.

Do moth traps and home remedies help?

Pheromone traps can help monitor the activity of certain moth species. They are species-specific and generally catch males. A trap does not remove larvae from clothing or food and therefore does not replace tackling the source.

Scented products such as lavender or cedarwood are likewise not a reliable solution for an existing infestation. Start with inspection, cleaning and treating or removing affected materials. Use any pest control products only as directed on the label. More practical guidance is available in our knowledge base.

When is further help advisable?

Do moths keep coming back, is the source impossible to find, or are several rooms affected? First have the species and possible source assessed. Note where and when you see moths and, if possible, keep a specimen for identification.
