Silverfish or long-tailed silverfish: what is the difference?

Look at both the insect and where it was found. Silverfish prefer damp conditions; long-tailed silverfish can also occur in drier rooms. Ventilating the bathroom alone is therefore not a solution for every bristletail.

Which features help with identification?

Both groups are wingless and have three tail filaments. Silverfish look silvery; long-tailed silverfish are generally greyer, hairier and have longer appendages.

Take a clear photo of a stationary insect. If unsure, safely catch a specimen for identification rather than guessing the species from its location alone.

Moisture offers a clue, not a definite diagnosis

If you find silverfish, check ventilation and possible leaks. A single insect does not prove there is a moisture problem.

Long-tailed silverfish can also live in warm, drier rooms. Activity among books or boxes calls for a different inspection, not just making the bathroom drier.

Protecting paper and stored materials

Keep storage organised, reduce unnecessary cardboard and inspect skirting boards and joints. Keep vulnerable documents in suitable sealed storage.

Damage to paper can have various causes. Look for insects and traces before attributing damage to one species.

When is further investigation advisable?

Have the species identified if activity recurs, affects several rooms or involves vulnerable archives. In a shared building, check whether reports are connected.

Do not buy a random product based on the general name “silverfish”. Identifying the insect and assessing the conditions first provides a more useful starting point.

Frequently asked questions

Not necessarily. They can also occur in drier rooms.

No, both are wingless.

Sources and further information

General information, not a diagnosis for your location. Have the species identified if in doubt. Consult a healthcare professional about health symptoms and do not use pesticides without appropriate instructions.
