Silverfish

Lepisma saccharinum

Silverfish prefer damp conditions. They resemble long-tailed silverfish, but this does not mean that the same moisture-management advice is effective for both species.

Silverfish or long-tailed silverfish?

Silverfish are silvery, wingless and have three tail filaments. Long-tailed silverfish are generally greyer and noticeably hairier, with longer appendages. Distinguishing them requires a clear view of the insect.

Moisture and hiding places

Bathrooms, cracks and other damp areas can provide suitable conditions. Multiple sightings are a reason to check ventilation and leaks, not automatic proof of a structural damp problem.

If the insects are mainly seen in dry rooms, among paper or boxes, investigate whether they are long-tailed silverfish.

Preventing silverfish

Ventilate adequately, repair leaks and reduce moisture where possible. Clean hiding places along skirting boards and remove unnecessary stored items.

If in doubt, have the species identified before buying control products. A single sighting does not necessarily mean a large infestation; record where activity recurs.

Frequently asked questions
