Clothes moth
Tineola bisselliella
With clothes moths, it is the larvae that cause damage, not the adult moths. Check animal fibres such as wool and silk, especially in rarely disturbed storage.
Recognising clothes moths and feeding damage
An adult clothes moth is small and yellowish to golden brown. Larvae, webbing and damaged textile fibres are more significant signs than a flying moth alone.
Clothes moths can be confused with other textile pests. A hole in a jumper does not establish the cause; inspect the material and any larvae.
Where should you look for the source?
Look in seldom-used woollen clothing, carpet edges, upholstery and stored textiles. Adult moths in a pantry may instead be pantry moths.
Also check animal-derived materials that are not handled daily. Keep suspect items separate while inspecting the remaining storage.
Protecting textiles safely
Store clothing clean, and keep items that will remain unused for long periods properly sealed. Clean the wardrobe and surrounding area, and treat affected textiles using a method suited to the care label and material.
Washing, professional cleaning or freezing may be options depending on the material; follow the conditions specified in reliable guidance. Do not assume a single temperature or treatment duration is suitable for every garment.
