Recognising bed bugs: which signs can you check?
Check mattress seams, the bed frame and headboard for insects, shed skins and dark spots. Itching or bites do not provide a definite diagnosis. Do not move suspect belongings to other rooms without taking precautions, and ask for identification if unsure.
Why bites are not proof
Skin reactions vary from person to person and can have other causes. A line of bites is therefore not a reliable way to establish the presence of bed bugs.
Look for several clues and take clear photos of insects and signs. For medical questions or severe skin reactions, consult a healthcare professional.
A targeted inspection of the sleeping area
With good lighting, look along mattress seams, bed-frame joints and behind the headboard. Check accessible gaps without unnecessarily dismantling the room.
Note where you find anything. Do not move furniture or textiles through the building without appropriate precautions.
What should you do with luggage and textiles?
Keep suspect items separate and seek advice on treatment suitable for the material. Do not use improvised heating, flammable products or indiscriminate sprays.
Discarding a mattress is not automatically necessary and can actually spread bed bugs if it is moved carelessly.
