Bed bugs
Cimex lectularius
When bed bugs are suspected, signs around the sleeping area matter more than itching or bites alone. Bed bugs can be brought in with luggage or furniture.

Identifying bed bugs
Adult bed bugs are flat, oval and brownish. Younger bugs are smaller and lighter. Look around mattress seams, the bed frame and headboard for insects, shed skins and dark spots.
Skin reactions vary from person to person. Bites alone cannot confirm bed bugs; fleas, mosquitoes and other causes can produce similar symptoms.
Where should you look, and what should you avoid moving?
Inspect seams and joints in good light. Take clear photographs of insects and signs. Do not move suspect furniture or textiles to another room without protective containment.
In a hotel or shared building, inform the responsible manager so that inspections and measures can be coordinated.
Safe first steps and prevention
If bed bugs are suspected, request expert identification and a plan for the affected room. Do not immediately discard a mattress: careless movement can spread the insects.
Check second-hand furniture and avoid keeping luggage unnecessarily close to the bed when travelling. Follow expert instructions and the care label when treating textiles; do not use improvised heat sources or indiscriminate sprays.
