Black rat
Rattus rattus
Black rats are good climbers and may use sheltered locations high up in buildings. The name is misleading: not every black rat has black fur.

Characteristics of the black rat
Black rats are relatively slender, with large ears, a pointed snout and a long tail. Brown rats are usually sturdier. A photograph showing colour alone cannot confirm the species.
Black rats in buildings
Ceiling voids, beams and elevated storage areas can provide shelter. Noises in an attic can also be caused by mice, birds or other animals; investigate signs before choosing an approach.
Check food supplies and routes along walls, cables or pipes. Do not undertake unsafe work on roofs or in hard-to-reach cavities yourself.
Prevention and control
Store food and animal feed in sealed containers and have openings in the building envelope investigated. The best approach combines access prevention, food management and monitoring.
If signs keep recurring, have the species and routes assessed. Do not seal cavities without checking whether animals may still be inside; plan exclusion measures carefully.

General information, not a diagnosis for your location. Have the species identified if in doubt. Consult a healthcare professional about health symptoms and do not use pesticides without appropriate instructions.
